Final Workshop Advances SB’s Long-Term GDP Forecasting Framework to Strengthen Market Readiness

On 15 February 2024, Single Buyer (Load Forecast Unit) hosted the final workshop for the second year of its three-year study on “Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Forecasting and Economic Outlook for Malaysia.” The study, initiated in July 2022 in collaboration with RAM Rating Services and Sunway University, supports the development of robust long-term economic projections to enhance power system planning and market preparedness.

The initiative reflects Single Buyer’s commitment to strengthening the analytical foundations underpinning demand forecasting, generation planning and long-term market stability. By aligning macroeconomic outlooks with electricity demand projections, SB enhances transparency and predictability for market participants and policymakers.

Study Focus Areas
  • Identification of Malaysia’s key GDP growth drivers
  • Development of long-term GDP forecasting models over a 30-year horizon
  • Scenario modelling to assess alternative economic growth pathways

The workshop, held at DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside, was attended by representatives from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission, and relevant Single Buyer divisions.

Key presentations outlined structural growth drivers — including technological development, policy direction and global economic conditions — alongside predictive models designed to support long-term planning resilience. Scenario analyses provided insights into potential economic trajectories and their implications for electricity demand and system adequacy.

The session concluded with an interactive dialogue, reinforcing cross-agency alignment on economic assumptions that underpin Malaysia’s power sector planning framework.

As the study progresses into its final phase, the enhanced forecasting capability will further support Single Buyer’s role in ensuring orderly market development, resource adequacy and long-term system reliability — strengthening confidence in Malaysia’s evolving energy landscape.
