Study Visit to South Korea Strengthens Single Buyer’s Market and System Capabilities

From 6–12 August 2023, Single Buyer undertook a technical study visit to South Korea, engaging with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Power Exchange (KPX) and the Korea Electricity Commission (KOREC) to deepen institutional insights into advanced electricity market structures and regulatory frameworks.

The delegation examined South Korea’s market governance model, dispatch mechanisms, pricing architecture and system operations, gaining valuable perspectives on how mature power markets integrate competition, reliability and regulatory oversight. The programme also included a technical site visit to Korea Southern Power Co. Ltd.’s (KOSPO) Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant, providing first-hand exposure to emerging low-carbon generation technologies and grid integration practices.

These engagements enhance Single Buyer’s analytical depth in market design, regulatory architecture and operational readiness, contributing to the continued evolution of Malaysia’s electricity market framework. By benchmarking against established regional markets, Single Buyer strengthens its institutional capability to refine governance structures, enhance transparency and advance system resilience in line with Malaysia’s energy transition objectives.

Through structured international engagements, Single Buyer continues to elevate its market administration and system planning competencies, reinforcing confidence in Malaysia’s increasingly dynamic and forward-looking power sector.
