Technical Engagement and Site Benchmarking with Sarawak Energy
On 15–16 August 2022, Single Buyer representatives, together with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), undertook a technical engagement with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) at its headquarters in Kuching, followed by site visits to key generation and hydrogen facilities.
The discussions focused on Sarawak’s electricity market structure, renewable energy portfolio, interconnection prospects and hydrogen development initiatives. The engagement provided comparative insights into large-scale hydro resource management, cross-border transmission potential and emerging low-carbon technologies within a vertically integrated utility framework.
Delegates subsequently visited SEB’s Integrated Hydrogen Production Plant and Refuelling Station, gaining exposure to operational processes for hydrogen generation, storage and mobility applications. The visit highlighted the integration of hydrogen into Sarawak’s broader decarbonisation strategy.
On 16 August 2022, the delegation conducted a technical site visit to the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant. The session included briefings on system operations, reservoir management and generation optimisation, followed by a tour of the main reservoir, intake structures, spillway and powerhouse facilities.
Through structured benchmarking across diverse generation technologies — hydro and hydrogen — Single Buyer enhances its institutional perspective on large-scale renewable integration, energy diversification and interconnection planning. Such engagements strengthen analytical depth and market preparedness as Malaysia advances toward a more integrated and low-carbon electricity landscape.
