Three officers from the Generation Unit of Technical Advisory and Development, Single Buyer has participated in the 2023 IERE-CSRIO Brisbane Hydrogen Workshop, Brisbane, Australia, which was held on the 22nd to the 25th of May 2023.
Presenter 1: Aizuddin bin Mohd Sopian discussed the need for energy storage solutions to manage excess solar PV generation in Malaysia. The presentation explores the technoeconomic analysis of two storage options: battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hydrogen storage systems using electrolyzers. Few types of electrolyzers and BESS are considered, and a quantitative and qualitative comparison is made. Recommended solutions for managing excess solar energy are presented.
Presenter 2: Mohamad Hakim Zainuddin emphasized the importance of maintaining a diverse energy mix and energy security in Peninsular Malaysia. To achieve renewable energy targets, there is a focus on preventing curtailment of solar energy. Hydrogen is proposed as a solution for utilizing surplus solar energy, offering ancillary services and grid balancing. However, the presentation acknowledges potential challenges and limitations associated with the adoption of hydrogen in the grid system.
Presenter 3: Joel Praveen Makenthiran presented on the evaluation of the viability of hydrogen-fueled gas turbines for power generation in Peninsular Malaysia. The presentation considers the techno-economic aspects, and technical challenges associated with hydrogen combustion. The speaker also discusses the government's support and regulatory framework for the hydrogen industry. The presentation concludes by considering the feasibility of hydrogen-fueled gas turbines in the context of Malaysia's net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050.
These presentations collectively address the challenges and opportunities in utilizing hydrogen and energy storage to enhance renewable energy integration and maintain energy security in Peninsular Malaysia.
